Thk about the questions before you read this article.
1. Who had ade an ipa your life?
2. How vivid are your ories fro your childhood?
Oi, vestigatgthe backyard of our hoeTeu the ty objects and cule begs of y world, I ca upon a holeone of the boards of the fence. I looked through the hole and saw a ndscape like that behd our hoe, uncared for, and wild. I oved back a few steps, becae I sensed vaguely that sothg was about to happen. All of a sudden a hand appeared—a ty hand of a boy about y own age. By the ti I ca close aga, the hand was gone, andits pce there was a arvelo white sheep.
The sheep’s wool was faded. Its wheels had escaped. All of this only ade it ore authentic. I had never seen such a wonderful sheep. I looked back through the hole but the boy had disappeared. I went to the hoe and brought out a treasure of y oene, opened, full of odor and res, which I adored. I set it downthe sa spot a off with the sheep.
I never saw either the hand or the boy aga. And I have never aga seen a sheep like that either. The toy I lost fallya fire. But even now,1954, alost fifty years old, whenever I pass a toy shop, I look furtively to the dow, but it’s hey don’t ake sheep like that anyore.
I have been a cky an. To feel the tiacy of brothers is a arvelo thglife. To feel the love of people who we love is a fire that feeds our life. But to feel the affe that es fro those who we do not know, fro those unknown to , who are watchg over our sleep and solitude, over our dangers and our weakhat is sothg still greater and ore beautiful becae it widens out the boundaries of , and unites all livg thgs.
That exge brought ho tofor the first ti a precio idea: that all of huanity is sohow together. That experience ca toaga uch ter; this ti it stood out strikgly agast a background of trouble and persecution.
It won’t surprise you then that I attepted to give sothg resy, earthlike, and fragrantexge for huan brotherhood. Jt as I once left the pene by the fence, I have sceleft y words on the door of so any people who were unknown to , peopleprison, or hunted, or alone.
That is the great lesson I learnedy childhood, the backyard of a lonely hoe. Maybe it was nothg but a ga o boys pyed who didn’t know each other and ass to the other so good thgs of life. Yet aybe this sall and ysterio exge of gifts reaed sidealso, deep aructible, givg y poetry light.
